Some Friends

I really enjoyed reading about Nancy Wride’s encounter with the so-called friendship bread starter (“The Blob of Guilt,” April 21). My sister mailed a similar blob to me, carefully wrapped and inside a plastic container. It began to rise and expand en route, and by the time it reached my doorstep, it was a leaky, sticky mess that got all over the other mail I received that day.
I hate to think about what kind of trail it left at the post office and in the mail carrier’s pouch! At least I was absolved of the guilt of not making the bread, as it was impossible to do anything with the mess that came in my mail.
