Although several of Stanley Kubrick’s films drew searingly negative portraits of American society, he was never, to the best of my knowledge, accused of having committed treason. Yet David Gritten, in his otherwise fine profile of Bernardo Bertolucci (“Bertolucci’s Next: The Opposite of X,” May 16), refers to the late director of “Dr. Strangelove,” “Lolita” and “2001: A Space Odyssey” as an “ex-patriot.”
What the New York-born Kubrick’s long residence in England made him, Mr. Gritten, was an “expatriate.”
P.S.: One more word with which Calendar’s editors urgently need to become acquainted: “proofreaders.”
