April Unusually Busy for Imports at L.A. Port

Imports to the Port of Los Angeles notched their highest mark of the year in April as a scheduling snafu that had delayed some shipments in March sent more freighters than normal into the nation’s second-busiest port, officials said Wednesday.
More than 146,000 cargo containers steamed into the port in April, a roughly 4% increase over last year. The number was nearly 12,000 containers higher than inbound levels in February, the last monthly high.
Meanwhile, port exports continued their months-long slump as a strong U.S. dollar and slowly recovering Asian economies continue to dampen demand for U.S. goods abroad. Outbound cargo in April fell 11% over a year ago.
April container statistics from neighboring Port of Long Beach, the nation’s busiest, are expected to be released in the next few days.
