Muran’s Single Secures a Title

Newbury Park High clinched at least a share of the Marmonte League championship Tuesday when Cindy Muran’s eighth-inning hit gave the Panthers a 3-2 victory over Simi Valley at Newbury Park.

Muran broke a 2-2 tie with a one-out, bases-loaded single. Darlene Stokes hit a two-run single in the fourth for Newbury Park.

The Panthers (21-7, 10-2 in league play) can win the title outright if Thousand Oaks loses to Royal on Thursday.

In other Marmonte League games:

Thousand Oaks 5, Moorpark 1--Lacey Cope had a two-run triple and Nicole Angelo (10-3) pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Thousand Oaks (19-7, 9-2) at the Thousand Oaks Community Center.

Christy Daley had two hits, including a run-scoring triple, for Moorpark (13-13, 2-9).

Royal 1, Westlake 0--Nikki Olivia singled to score Julia Knasin with one out in the second inning for Royal (14-13, 5-6) in a Marmonte League game at Rancho Simi Community Park.

Knasin walked, stole second and went to third on a groundout. Winning pitcher Carrie Harvey (5-4) threw a two-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.

Westlake pitcher Erin Voeltz (16-7) also threw a two-hitter, with 10 strikeouts and one walk, but the Warriors (18-8, 7-4) suffered their fourth consecutive loss.

In other games:

Quartz Hill 1, Lancaster 0--Jodie Cox (23-1) threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts and the Rebels (23-1, 9-0) won a Golden League game at Lancaster (6-11, 4-5).

Tara Jensen broke up Cox’s no-hit bid with a two-out single in the seventh. Cox had two hits.

Highland 9, Antelope Valley 0--Melissa Rawson had a three-run home run and her sister Nicole Rawson struck out two in three hitless innings for host Highland (16-10, 6-3) in a Golden League game.

Keri Pulcifer had three hits and Natalie Rawson had two hits for Highland.

Hart 2, Valencia 0--Jocelyn Evans hit a home run and the visiting Indians (20-5-1, 8-1) won a Foothill League game at the Hart softball complex. Amanda Fortune and Lindsey Kontra combined on a two-hitter for Hart.

Saugus 10, Burbank 0--Kelly Cornelison had two hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning, of a Foothill League game at McCambridge Park in Burbank that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Calabasas 2, Malibu 0--Amy Rosson threw a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts, Carly Weinstein had two hits and the Coyotes (14-6-1, 10-1) won a Frontier League game at Malibu.

Ventura 2, San Marcos 0--Cassie Nicoletto had two run-scoring singles and Crystal Gravelin struck out three while pitching a complete game in a Channel League game at Ventura (9-10, 5-6).

Notre Dame 1, Harvard-Westlake 0--The Knights (19-7, 7-3) managed only a leadoff single by Patricia Wetzel in the first inning, but Wetzel later scored on a fielding error and Notre Dame held on to claim second place in the Mission League. Amanda De La Cerda (16-7) allowed three hits and struck out five for Notre Dame.

Oak Park 16, Bishop Diego 0--Freshman right-hander Melissa Johnson threw her first no-hitter, facing one batter over the minimum, for visiting Oak Park (18-4-1, 8-1) in a Tri-Valley League game called after five innings because of a 10-run rule.

La Reina 3, St. Bonaventure 1--Monica Thompson accounted for all of La Reina’s runs in a Tri-Valley League game at La Reina (18-7, 8-1).

Glendale 6, Pasadena 2--Linette Miranda (10-11) pitched a one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a Pacific League game at Pasadena.

Kristine Rader had two hits, including a run-scoring single, for Glendale (11-14, 5-4).

Hoover 2, Arcadia 0--Hoover (16-8, 6-3) scored twice in the top of the 11th inning of a Pacific League game. Cori Hebert (16-8) went the distance, striking out 16 and walking one.
