Shires Provides the Difference for Chatsworth

Chatsworth High snapped a tie in the fifth inning when Cassie Shires scored on a ground out by Rebecca McIntire to defeat Garfield, 4-3, Tuesday in a first-round City Championship playoff game at Garfield.
Shires (9-6) threw a three-hitter, struck out eight and had two hits.
Samantha Pivnik went three for three for No. 10-seeded Chatsworth (14-6).
Garfield was seeded No. 7.
In other City Championship first-round games:
El Camino Real 13, Monroe 1--The top-seeded Conquistadores (21-3) sent 14 batters to the plate in a nine-run third inning at El Camino Real.
Christina Enea went four for five with three runs batted in and Cara Blumfield and Ashley Redlin each had three hits.
Redlin (14-3) allowed five hits and struck out 11.
Monroe finished 7-17.
Kennedy 13, Eagle Rock 2--Patty Del Real threw a four-hitter, struck out nine and collected four hits for host Kennedy (18-2).
Angie De La Cerda also had four hits and Marianne Trujillo added three hits for the No. 3-seeded Golden Cougars, who had 19 hits.
Sylmar 3, Crenshaw 0--Krystal Mejia had two hits with a solo home run and the Spartans (15-5) won a first-round game at Crenshaw (17-3).
Sylmar’s Vanessa Lira threw a five-hitter with five strikeouts.
Westchester 5, Verdugo Hills 1--Westchester ace Markean Neal dominated the Dons (12-9), allowing four hits and striking out 13 at Westchester.
The No. 8-seeded Comets will face El Camino Real on Thursday in a quarterfinal.
Carson 18, North Hollywood 0--The visiting Huskies (10-6) were no match for No. 2-seeded Carson.
San Pedro 5, San Fernando 0--Defending City champion San Pedro was too much for the visiting Tigers.
In City Division first-round games:
Cleveland 10, Marshall 7--Morgan Bleimeyer’s two-run triple highlighted a three-run seventh for the Cavaliers (8-7) at Marshall.
Bleimeyer finished with four hits, including a home run and two triples, and four RBIs. Angie Veliz and Kristy Schultz each added three hits for Cleveland.
Fremont 4, Reseda 3--Stephanie Yeatts (4-12) pitched a three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking one, for Reseda (4-12) at Fremont.
Fifth-seeded Fremont improved to 11-2.
Veronica Aguilar, Debbie Lone and Esther Cisneros each had run-scoring singles for Reseda.
Canoga Park 8, Roosevelt 2--Jenny Pitillo pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts for host Canoga Park (11-8).
Granada Hills 15, Narbonne 8--Erin Bennett had five hits, including a two-run triple, and five RBIs for Granada Hills (5-18) in an upset of No. 4-seeded Narbonne.
Kristen Rodner contributed four hits and three RBIs to the victory.
