College Gets a Late Night Visit From a Black Bear

Azusa Pacific University got an unexpected student of the forest Tuesday: a black bear that apparently loved to study the cafeteria food.

The 180-pound bear was seen by campus security guards wandering near the university’s cafeteria around midnight, officials said. The animal climbed a pine tree near the science building on the campus, nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

About 2 a.m., California Department of Fish and Game wardens arrived and shot a tranquilizer dart into the bear’s left quarter, police said. The bear reportedly was not hurt when it fell about 50 feet to the ground. Fish and Game officials placed the bear in a truck with a holding container.

A tag was put on the bear’s ear so authorities could monitor its movements. The animal was released about 10 miles into the Angeles National Forest, officials said.
