Police Magnet Students Vie to Be ‘Toughest Cadet’

Students from the five Los Angeles Police Academy magnet high schools will battle it out Friday to prove who’s the “Toughest Cadet Alive.”
Teams of six cadets from each school will compete in written essay and timed obstacle course events at Monroe High School in North Hills in the first competition sponsored by the Police Academy since the magnet program started in 1996.
The program aims to provide minority and disadvantaged high school students with the skills and training they need for law enforcement careers.
“This is going to be a fun event for our kids,” said Roberta Weintraub, executive director of the Los Angeles Police Academy Magnet School Foundation. “Part of being a cop is going through mental and physical competition, so we want to prepare our kids for that.”
Participating high schools are Reseda, Monroe, San Pedro, Wilson and Dorsey. More than 500 cadets are enrolled in the program citywide.
Awards presented after the competition will include Toughest Team, Toughest Female Cadet, and Toughest Male Cadet.
