*** Houndog, “Houndog,” Columbia/Legacy. Apparently not needing sleep, David Hidalgo spent some of his after-hours from Los Lobos and Latin Playboy sessions recording with Canned Heat’s Mike Halby. And after-hours it sounds--shadowy, spare charcoal sketches of dream-time blues, with Halby’s low, resonant voice and Hidalgo’s rustic violin in particular giving distinctive, hypnotic airs of mystery.
