Groups Appeal EIR on 350-Home Project

The Environmental Defense Center and the California Native Plant Society have filed an appeal challenging the environmental impact report for a proposed Oxnard gated community.

The appeal questions the effect the 350-home project will have on the Ventura marsh milkvetch, a plant thought to be extinct until 1997.

The Oxnard Planning Commission certified the environmental impact report. But with the appeal, the Oxnard City Council will now have to evaluate it before deciding whether to approve the project.

The North Shore at Mandalay Bay development would be located on a site near McGrath State Beach that was once used for oil disposal. Since the marsh milkvetch was rediscovered at the site in 1997, environmentalists have lobbied to have the plant classified as endangered.

The groups fear that if homes are built near the plants’ environment, the species will not be able to recover.
