University Wins Pacific Coast League Golf Title

Brian Sinay shot a four-under 32 at Strawberry Farms to lead University to its third consecutive Pacific Coast League golf title with a 174-227 victory Tuesday over Estancia.

Ron Won, Branden Fella and Ryan Miller each shot a one-under 35 to help the third-ranked Trojans (16-2, 10-0) finish with their lowest score at their home course this season. Estancia fell to 2-8 in league.

In the Sea View League finals:

Lavery wins--Irvine’s Mike Lavery finished first with a one-over 145 in two days at Redhawk in Temecula. Lavery shot a three-under 69 Tuesday after finishing with a four-over 76 Monday. Santa Margarita’s Taylor Wood shot 147 to place second and Irvine’s J.J. Johnston shot 150 to take third. El Toro’s Satoru Suzuki, who finished in a three-way tie for sixth, birdied in a playoff to earn a trip to the Southern Section individual regionals. The top six golfers advance to the regionals.

In the Sunset League:

No. 7 Fountain Valley 404, Edison 433--Jeff Greenfield medaled for visiting Fountain Valley (11-5, 6-3), shooting three-over 75 at the SeaCliff.

No. 9 Huntington Beach 200, No. 6 Los Alamitos 205--Kevin Kohara and Andy Anderson co-medaled and led the way for visiting Huntington Beach (12-4, 7-2), at the Seal Beach Navy course. They each shot one-over 38.

In Empire League badminton:

Nguyen and Wong win--Century’s Brian Nguyen and Kirsten Wong defeated Kiet Lam and Thuy Diet of Loara to win the league mixed doubles title. Cypress’ Jason Liu and Michelle Kuo captured third place by defeating Loara’s Mike Chov and Nini Mai.

In Century League baseball:

Foothill 4, Santa Ana Valley 1--Foothill’s Mike Castillo had 10 strikeouts to give him 75 for the season, a school record. Castillo surpassed Clint Blevins’ record of 74, set in 1997. Castillo went the distance for his fifth victory.

Villa Park 8, Orange 4--Junior right-hander Jeff Tuttle had 11 strikeouts and gave up only two hits for Villa Park (14-8, 10-2).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 4, Laguna Hills 3--Kyle Mowery scored the winning run on Jessie Kowalski’s single in the bottom of the seventh. Kowalski made a diving catch in left field on a sinking line drive with a runner on third to end Laguna Hills’ threat in the top of the seventh. The Wolverines improved to 14-8, 9-3. Laguna Hills is 10-13, 5-7.

In Freeway League boys’ tennis:

No. 6 Sunny Hills 17, Sonora 1--Joseph Kao, Sam Yeu and Robert Lo swept their singles sets for Sunny Hills (14-4, 9-0), which clinched a share of the league title.
