Detective Shot at Firing Range Is Out of Coma

Montclair Police Det. Amy Nelson, shot accidentally in the head at a law enforcement firing range in March, has come out of a coma and is now in a long-term care facility.
Nelson, 43, the mother of three, is still unable to speak, walk or sit up unassisted but is beginning rehabilitation, Montclair Police Capt. Kevin Piper said.
The 10-year veteran was wounded while she was firing her .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun at a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department practice range. Two other officers were shooting alongside her. Nelson underwent surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center to remove bullet fragments from her brain.
Montclair police have received a report from the Sheriff’s Department on the accident. A review panel will release the results within two weeks, Piper said.
Police have suggested that Nelson could have been hit by a bullet ricocheting off a dirt berm, a nearby concrete walkway or even the angled target frame that was designed to avoid such bounce-backs.
