Foothill softball Coach Joe Gonzalez will have surgery today to remove one of his kidneys.
Gonzalez, 58, said Monday that a growth was discovered on a kidney during an annual physical examination. He said doctors did not know if it is cancerous.
“Until you go in and look, you never really know,” Gonzalez said. “The prognosis is that once the kidney’s removed, that’s the end of it.”
Gonzalez expects to be in City of Hope Hospital in Duarte for about a week before finishing his three-week recuperation at home.
“I’m anticipating I’ll be back in time for the playoffs,” he said. The first round of the Southern Section playoffs begin May 21.
Foothill (22-3), which is Orange County’s top-ranked team and in first place in the Century League, will be coached by longtime assistant Joe Brunansky and Gonzalez’s son, Mike.
This is Gonzalez’s 10th season and his record is 140-56-1.
