A month after the City Council tabled a vote to repeal or revise the city’s campaign contributions law, the city attorney’s office will host a public workshop on the ordinance today at 3 p.m. in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. Last month, Councilwoman Shirley McCracken cited the need for more information and time to consider alternatives to the ordinance, adopted in 1993, which limits individual campaign contributions to $1,000 for local candidates and allows a special prosecutor to investigate alleged abuses of the law.
The ordinance triggered a bitter 1 1/2-year scandal after McCracken, Mayor Tom Daly and Councilman Frank Feldhaus were accused of violating city and state campaign contribution laws in the 1996 election. The charges against Daly were eventually dismissed; McCracken and Feldhaus paid fines to the city.
