The event: 37th Annual All Guilds fashion shows staged by Children’s Hospital of Orange County in Orange. The luncheons, held Thursday and Friday at the Anaheim Marriott, raised funds for CHOC’s outpatient clinic.
Day at the beach: In keeping with the California Dreamin’ theme, guests sat beneath colorful beach umbrellas at tables decorated with beach balls, sand toys and straw hats.
“I love California, bright colors, the sand and the sea,” said Sylvia Burnett, event chairwoman.
Burnett was inspired by the bold paintings of Laguna Beach artist Sally Huss, whose work adorned the invitations and wall murals. The fashion show, produced by Carlton Burnett (no relation), featured models showing off sunny styles from Orange County boutiques, along with dancing bathing beauties and a few beach boys in old-fashioned striped swimming suits.
The guys drew whistles and applause from the mostly female crowd of 750 who attended Thursday’s event; about 875 guests turned out for Friday’s luncheon.
Golden guilds: CHOC is supported by 15 guilds that have 1,800 members throughout Orange County. Since 1962, the guilds have raised more than $17 million for the hospital. The annual fashion show is the premier all-guilds event: “Each guild is like a separate company, but at this event we all come together,” Sylvia Burnett said.
The guilds support CHOC’s outpatient clinics in Orange and Santa Ana, which handle 70,000 patient visits a year.
Quote: “Our mission [at the outpatient clinic] is to not turn a child away who needs medical care,” said Helen Wardner, CHOC spokeswoman. “We also do a lot of education and training for families. We’re trying to [teach] people about taking care of their children.”
