Rock? No Way!

We have seen the face of the destruction of rock en espan~ol and it might be Shakira (along with Ricky Martin). And that divisively written story of yours (“Queen of Crossover?” by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez, April 18).
Please, do not categorize them as “rock.” Forty-plus years of trying to gain relevance and acceptance with our instruments, our language and our rhythms and it’s back to the Chicano musical Stone Age (when all we were allowed was bad “American” covers in Spanish on major labels).
The awful truth is this: In comparison, Shakira is a bad Alanis/Jewel wannabe while Ricky Martin (the ex-Menudo) is just that. I’ll take Lysa Flores, Blues Experiment and Pastilla any day.
