Lawmaker, First Lady Promote Reading

As part of a statewide push to promote reading, Assemblywoman Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) and state first lady Sharon Davis broke out a favorite children’s book Friday to read to students at Juanamaria Elementary School in Ventura.
Jackson recently coauthored a bill aimed at improving literacy that was signed by Gov. Gray Davis in late March. The bill establishes $75 million in grant funding for intensive reading programs at the elementary grade level.
The bill was approved as an urgency statute so the programs can start in time for the 1999-2000 school year.
Friday’s visit marked Davis’ first trip to Ventura County since her husband was sworn into office.
The first lady and the legislator read “Q is for Duck” to the students, then wrapped up their trip by visiting foster-care children at Casa Pacifica in Camarillo.
