Concordia Scores in Ninth, Beats Point Loma Nazarene

Derek Patterson’s two-run double in the bottom of the ninth gave Concordia a 5-4 victory over Point Loma Nazarene in a Golden State Athletic Conference baseball game Tuesday at Concordia.

Patterson’s double, his second of the game, came with one out and drove in Carlos Olmos and pinch runner Michael Oertly. Oertly scored from first after sliding around the tag attempt of Point Loma catcher James Peters.

Concordia trailed, 3-0, after 5 1/2 innings, but Matt Broesamle hit a three-run home run to tie it for the Eagles (19-16-1, 11-10). Matt Marquart (2-2) picked up the victory, giving up one run in the final 3 2/3 innings for Concordia.

Point Loma is 15-17, 7-12.

At the Spalding/Anteater Invitational men’s golf tournament:

Kribel, Stanford win--Joel Kribel shot a final-round three-under 69 on the 6,736-yard North Course at Coto de Caza to finish with a 54-hole total of six-under 210 to earn medalist honors and help Stanford win the team title by 19 strokes.

Stanford finished at 883 and Long Beach State was second at 902. UC Irvine tied for fifth with North Texas at 907 in the 19-team field.

Irvine’s Mike Lawrence tied for eighth, finishing eight-over 224.

At the Big West Conference gymnastics finals:

Boise State wins--Boise State beat Utah State, 195.475 to 195.200, although the Aggies had all-around champion Christy Denison.

Cal State Fullerton finished third with a season-high score of 192.325 and Coach Julie Knight was named conference coach of the year.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Southern California College 5-8, Cal Baptist 0-0--Gretchen Brandt pitched a five-hitter and struck out 10 in the first game and Gina Liebengood pitched a five-inning one-hitter in the second game of a doubleheader sweep for the Vanguards (26-9, 9-0).

In nonconference softball:

Hope International 4-6, Concordia 1-3--Leslie Graves had four runs batted in and Amanda Boswell hit a two-run home run to help the visiting Royals (14-16) sweep a doubleheader.
