NCAA NOTES
Coach Steve Lavin and UCLA reached an agreement on a new contract, the same day the school also announced an impending new deal for its women’s coach, Kathy Olivier.
Lavin got a six-year package with a rollover clause and an annual base salary of $578,000. The rollover clause means he will always have a six-year contract, which provides long-term financial security for Lavin and the chance for him to use that stability as a tool in recruiting.
His former deal ran through 2001-02 and was worth $475,000 a season.
Olivier’s contract, which also went through 2001-02, will likewise be extended into a six-year package after the Bruins reached the round of eight this season, though without the rollover clause. Financial details have not yet been finalized.
“Steve has built an outstanding foundation with his recruiting class,” Athletic Director Pete Dalis said in a statement. “We are excited about the direction of the program and are looking forward to many years of success with Steve as our head coach.
“We are excited with the progress of Kathy’s program as well. She has made steady improvement each year, culminating with the team’s Pac-10 title and march to the elite eight this season. Our women’s program has a very bright future.”
