Martinez, Barroso Deliver Major Blows for Rio Mesa, 9-6

Richard Martinez had a run-scoring double and Nick Barroso hit a home run to help Rio Mesa High defeat Palisades, 9-6, in a first-round game of the Redondo baseball tournament Monday at Rio Mesa.

Saul Gallegos had a two-run single in the second innning for Rio Mesa (7-1), ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times.

In other baseball games:

Kennedy 7, La Mirada 3--With four games this week, the Golden Cougars (4-4) used six pitchers to beat La Mirada in a first-round game of the Redondo tournament.

Alex Avalas’ run-scoring double highlighted a three-run fourth inning, giving Kennedy a 6-1 lead.

Fillmore 7, Village Christian 4--Host Fillmore scored five runs with the help of four walks and three errors in the sixth inning of a nonleague game. John Vega had the inning’s only hit, a two-run single.

Vega finshed with three hits and three runs batted in for Fillmore (5-0-1).

SOFTBALL

Calabasas 6, Nordhoff 3--Amy Rosson (6-2) earned the victory in relief of starter Candy Wang, allowing five hits in six innings of a Frontier League game at Calabasas.

Danielle Dryer and Heather Bell had doubles for Calabasas (6-2, 2-0).

Chatsworth 4, Granada Hills 1--Jackie Casado had a two-out, three-run triple in the first inning for the Chancellors (7-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference opener at Chatsworth.

Cassie Shires (5-3) threw a three-hitter and struck out three for Chatsworth.

Oak Park 5, Harvard-Westlake 0--Melissa Johnson pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and had a run-scoring single for Oak Park in a nonleague game at Valley View Park.

Jannel Buckely and Michelle Bregar each stole two bases and scored two runs for Oak Park (4-2-1).

Village Christian 4, Gladstone 0--Shannon Stauffer (2-4), a freshman right-hander, threw a one-hitter and struck out 11 for host Village Christian (4-4) in a nonleague game.

Cheryl Yaussi’s two-run double gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead in the first. Yaussi went two for three.

BOYS’ GOLF

San Marino 192, Crescenta Valley 202--Freshman Michael Park shot an even-par 35 for Crescenta Valley (6-3), but San Marino had six of the top eight scores in a nonleague match at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Park had two birdies and two bogeys.

Simi Valley 395, Thousand Oaks 424--Mark Modglin shot a five-over-par 71 to earn medalist honors for Simi Valley (7-0) in a nonleague match at Simi Hills Golf Course.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Campbell Hall d. Milken, 15-2, 15-5, 15-4--Cameron Klippsten had eight kills and five blocks to help the Vikings (3-1) to their third consecutive victory in a nonleague match at Milken.

Campbell Hall lost to Crespi in its season opener.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Birmingham 111, Chatsworth 43--Eli Kase won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:32.94, the 100 butterfly in 1:06.97 and swam legs on the victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays to help the Patriots to victory in a West Valley League meet at Birmingham.
