Uniform Acceptance : Girl Scouts Salute O’Dea Morr and Hinshaw, Women of Distinction, for Their Values, Leadership and Service
The event: The 1999 Women of Distinction luncheon staged by the Girl Scout Council of Orange County. The scouts’ salute to women who exemplify their values, leadership and community service took place recently at the Irvine Marriott.
Scouts’ honor: About 300 guests, including a dozen Girl Scouts in full uniform, applauded the Women of Distinction recipients: Lisa Hinshaw, assistant principal at Spurgeon Intermediate School in Santa Ana, and Judith O’Dea Morr, vice president of programming for the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.
Hinshaw has been involved in scouting for 35 years, since donning a Brownie Girl Scout uniform in the second grade. “My mom dragged me” to the first meeting, joked Hinshaw, who has volunteered for committees, task forces and program events for the local Girl Scout Council. “Scouting continues to provide young women with opportunities for leadership, travel and communication skills they can get nowhere else.”
Building leaders: Marty Evans, national executive director of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America, told the group that scouting develops “women of strength” and that most female leaders--including Hillary Rodham Clinton and Elizabeth Hanford Dole--were Girl Scouts. “Girl Scouting is way more than cookies, camping and crafts,” Evans said. “It’s building, one girl at a time, the leadership of this nation.”
Quote: “Once a Girl Scout always a Girl Scout,” said Morr, who started scouts as a Brownie. “Scouting took me from my narrow community on the South Side of Chicago and introduced me to a much larger world.”
Faces: Ginger Kleerup, event chairwoman; Judy Rosener, honorary chairwoman and former honoree; Christine Shingleton, local Girl Scout Council president; Cortney Sellers and Jessica Latin, senior Girl Scout board advisors; Stephanie Baldwin, Miss Orange 1999 and a former scout; former honorees Bernice Hird, Marian Bergeson, DeVera Heard and Lisz Cason; and Mona Ware, council executive director.
Bottom line: The luncheon was expected to net about $15,000 for programs sponsored by the Girl Scout Council of Orange County, which serves 25,500 local scouts.
What’s ahead: The Girl Scout Council of Orange County Alumni Assn. will hold a picnic at the Girl Scout Anaheim Program Center from 3 to 8 p.m. on May 22. For information, call the council office in Costa Mesa, (714) 979-7900, Ext. 397.
