Less Is Much More for Woodbridge Coach
The Woodbridge softball team won the Mohave (Ariz.) Tournament of Champions two years ago, but Coach Alan Dugard was more impressed with the second-place performance of his team last weekend.
“We won it with some incredible talent two years ago,” Dugard said. “This year we don’t have that same talent level, but some athletes who are a great group of kids.”
Woodbridge lost to Clovis, 5-4, in the final, and the Warriors were one strike away from the title.
“Their clean-up hitter was up with two outs and Briana Bohls got two strikes on her,” Dugard said. “Then one pitch was barely fouled off, I mean she just ticked it. Then she hit a shot to left-center field that won it for them.”
Bohls, who relieved starter Tracy Alcaraz in the fourth inning, hit a run-scoring single in a four-run fourth and freshman Maritza Padilla had a two-run single in the inning to help Woodbridge to a 4-1 lead before Clovis rallied.
Alcaraz, the Warriors’ ace, was the winning pitcher in four games to help Woodbridge reach the final, but she finally tired.
“They played incredible,” Dugard said. “It was the best performance by a team I’ve ever had.”

Many golfers yearn to make a hole-in-one just once in their life. Thursday, Pacifica sophomore Jeff Moreno made his second in a month.
Moreno made a hole-in-one using a wedge on the 134-yard eighth hole on the Cruiser Course at the Cypress Navy Course.
“It was a beautiful shot,” Pacifica Coach Dean DePeri said. “It landed past the flag, and spun back into the hole.”
Two weeks ago, Moreno used a three-iron to make a hole-in-one on the Cruiser Course’s 198-yard yard seventh hole, DePeri said.

Garland McMillan has resigned as the Rancho Alamitos baseball coach for personal reasons, Athletic Director Dan Rankin said Sunday.
McMillan was in his second season. Rancho Alamitos was 9-13 in 1998. The Vaqueros were 4-2 this season, including a 5-1 nonleague victory against Cerritos Friday.
McMillan said he could not comment on the situation.
