Council members decided last week to give more thought to potential new regulations on massage parlors. Councilwoman Shirley McCracken said the council needs more time to consider input from massage businesses before voting on one of the ordinance’s three versions proposed last month.

City and law enforcement officials developed various versions of the ordinance, with the goal of decreasing illicit activity through tougher requirements for business operation. But one version, which eliminates a separate permit for off-site massages, was meant to be more business-friendly. Attorney Allison Hargrave, who spoke before the council on behalf of two massage businesses, said the proposed ordinance puts unfair burdens on long-standing and reputable massage businesses.
