Singer Taylor’s Family Ties Shine Through

“This has been the happiest night of my life--so far,” Sally Taylor proclaimed from the Troubadour stage Saturday. Not coincidentally, Taylor and her three-piece rock band had just performed “Happy Now,” the most melodic folk-pop tune on her self-released debut LP, “Tomboy Bride.”

Taylor was joined on the number by her brother, Ben, and, in an apparently unexpected move, her mom, Carly Simon, who herself was “discovered” at the same club in the early ‘70s. “This is so exciting! I’m brought to my knees!” exclaimed a proud mom, as she knelt and hugged her daughter’s legs.

Taylor’s genealogy (dad, of course, is James Taylor) has provided her with some familiar characteristics. Interestingly, you can hear both Mom and Pop in her rich, pleasant, nasally albeit effortless vocals. And she writes some fine--if, at times, lyrically trite--songs.

Where she may be somewhat lacking compared to her folks, however, is in her stage presence; her demeanor was so informal at times that the performance could have been at a high school assembly for family and friends.

Still, there’s something charming about that in this city of professionals, and when Taylor, who lives in Boulder, Colo., concluded her set with a beautiful solo rendition of the LP’s title track, the charisma on display suddenly seemed like a chip off the old block.
