Hurricanes Storm Back to Tie Coyotes

Ron Francis had two goals, and Martin Gelinas tied the game with 1:34 left in regulation as the Carolina Hurricanes came from three goals down in the third period to tie Phoenix, 5-5, Monday night at Phoenix.

Ray Sheppard had a goal and an assist, and Jeff O’Neill also scored for the Hurricanes, who lost a goal 27 seconds into the third period when Gary Roberts’ score was disallowed because of an early whistle by referee Dennis LaRue.

With the tie, Phoenix moves five points ahead of the Mighty Ducks for fourth place in the Western Conference.

Keith Tkachuk had a goal and three assists for the slumping Coyotes, who couldn’t hold on despite a 5-2 lead with less than 11 minutes to play.

Jeremy Roenick, Bob Corkum, Deron Quint and defenseman Keith Carney also scored for the Coyotes, 3-11-1 their last 15 games.

New York Rangers 1, Washington 1--Enrico Ciccone scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period for the Capitals at New York.

The tie moved the Rangers one point behind the Boston Bruins in the race for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference. The Capitals closed within eight points of Boston.

Capital goaltender Olaf Kolzig, who stopped 22 shots, made the save of the game on a one-timer from the slot by Scott Fraser a minute left in overtime. Richter made 33 saves for New York.

Roman Ndur scored his first NHL goal to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo 2, New York Islanders 1--Miroslav Satan scored twice and Dwayne Roloson gave the Sabres another strong performance in the net at Buffalo, N.Y..

Satan, who has 31 goals, became the first 30-goal scorer for Buffalo in three seasons.

Bryan Smolinski scored for the Islanders.

Roloson made 23 saves and has given up one goal in each of his last two starts.

New Jersey 2, Vancouver 1--Martin Brodeur made 26 saves and the New Jersey Devils stretched their road winning streak to four games at Vancouver, Canada.

Randy McKay and Patrik Elias scored for the Devils.

Alexander Mogilny broke up Brodeur’s shutout bid with 1:19 left.
