Five first-graders from Simmons Elementary School met some Hollywood celebrities recently after claiming top honors in a Southern California student writing competition sponsored by the Screen Actors Guild Foundation.
The students--Giovanni Ascencio, Vinh Le, Gladis Gonzalez, Jessica Cruz and Angelica Bello--accepted their first-place scholarship award of $2,500, which they will split, at the Universal Amphitheater as special guests of film and TV stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Pamela Reed, Mitch Ryan and Barbara Bain, of “Mission Impossible” fame and founder of SAG’s BookPals youth literacy campaign. The children’s illustrated stories about the wonders of books were selected best among first-grade entrants in the Dr. Seuss Language Arts Contest for “Read Across America Day.” Information: (714) 663-6096.
