Market Force

Having visited more than 100 California farmers markets, I’m often asked what’s my favorite. The largest markets may offer the most spectacular variety, but some of the smaller ones prove equally rewarding. I recall fondly the cheerfulness at Calabasas, the seascape at Redondo Beach and the picturesque stroll at San Clemente. Surprises abound, such as the 12,000 super-premium pineapples Eli Hofshi of ACW Farms is growing in greenhouses, ready to loose on the world next summer. Whether I’m buying salad fixings for lunch or prospecting for rarities, each visit is a treasure hunt.
