GTE Says Backlog for DSL Is Under Control

GTE Corp., the state’s second-largest local phone company, admits it couldn’t handle the demand for high-speed Internet connections earlier this year--especially in the Los Angeles area. But the company says its order backlog is now under control.
In March, April and May, GTE had about 200 unfilled orders for its popular Internet access product, which uses a technology called digital subscriber line, or DSL. GTE launched the service in September 1998 and is rolling it out in neighborhoods it serves to compete with cable modems.
