Lakers Await Only Jackson’s Approval

The negotiations, for all intents and purposes, are complete.
The Lakers have offered Phil Jackson a four-year, $24-million deal to become the team’s coach, and it has been generally agreed to by Jackson’s agent, Todd Musburger, sources say, pending a final nod.
“The only thing left is for Phil to decide if he wants to take it,” one source said Saturday. “There’s nothing else to do. His decision, yes or no.
“And I can’t imagine him not taking it.”
No further negotiations are scheduled for this weekend.
Jackson, a six-time champion with the Chicago Bulls, is due to return from an Alaskan vacation Monday, and is scheduled to be in L.A. on Wednesday and Thursday campaigning with former Sen. Bill Bradley.
On Thursday, Jackson is set to speak at a fund-raising dinner in Beverly Hills, where, a source said, “I’m sure he’ll be doing that as the Laker coach.”
With Jackson in Alaska, Laker Executive Vice President Jerry West has solely been negotiating with Musburger, who has informed him that Jackson wants to coach the Lakers.
Jackson is due to be in L.A. early this week for meetings with West and possibly owner Jerry Buss and to decide whether to accept the offer.
