Florida State’s Chavez Shuts Down Aggies

OMAHA — Reliever Chris Chavez shut down Texas A&M; and Matt Diaz hit two home runs to lead Florida State to a 7-3 victory Saturday over Texas A&M.;
Diaz went 3 for 5 with three runs batted in and scored twice in the College World Series opener for both teams. Chavez retired 12 straight and struck out six for the second-seeded Seminoles (54-12) after replacing starter Nick Stocks with the bases loaded and no outs in the fifth and Florida State ahead 4-3.
Chavez proceeded to strike out the side on 14 pitches, 11 of them strikes.
The victory advanced Florida State to meet Stanford Monday. The seventh-seeded Aggies (52-17) will play Cal State Fullerton in an elimination game.
As a freshman in 1998, Diaz hit four home runs in an NCAA regional victory over Oklahoma.
