“Austin Powers, The Spy Who Shagged Me” had the kind of opening-day box office success that would prompt the international man of mystery to shout: “Groovy, baby!”
The film about a swinging spy facing a lost libido drew an estimated $20.2 million on Friday, putting it on track to rank among the top five grossing movies for a first weekend.
The sequel is almost certain to have a bigger first weekend box-office draw than the $53-million total brought in by the original.
It outdid “Independence Day,” which earned $17.4 million on opening day.
“Phantom Menace” episode of “Star Wars” holds the record for the highest opening-day box office with $28.5 million. “Lost World: Jurassic Park” holds the record for biggest weekend draw with $72.1 million in 1997.
