Women’s Soccer All-Star Tour Will Make Stop at Pond
Can’t get enough of the World Cup-winning U.S. women’s soccer team? That’s what the players are counting on as they announced Tuesday an All-American Soccer All-Stars tour beginning Oct. 22 that would include a game Dec. 9 at the Arrowhead Pond.
“The only thing we’ve learned recently is that our fans want to see more of us and more of soccer,†said midfielder Julie Foudy of Mission Viejo in a release. “We’re answering their call.â€
All 20 members of the U.S. team will participate at one time or another during the tour, which will reach 10 to 12 U.S. cities and conclude Dec. 11. Twelve team members will appear at every site.
The indoor games will feature a four-quarter format and be against a world all-star team whose players will be chosen from various international teams.
Tickets, priced at $37.50, $29.50 and $20, are on sale at the Pond box office.
*The Galaxy will face their A-League farm club, the Zodiac, at 7:30 tonight at Santa Ana Stadium. The Galaxy (9-7), which is 1-0-1 against the Zodiac, has two former players who are with the Zodiac, forward Jose Vasquez and defender Peter Lak.
The Galaxy will be without Cobi Jones and Robin Fraser, who have prior commitments to the MLS All-Star team and the U.S National team. But the rest of the Galaxy is expected to play, including newly acquired Seth George of Santa Margarita High and UCLA.
Tickets for tonight’s game are $10 and $7.50 for reserved seating and $5 for general admission
BASEBALL
* The Angel wives and the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County will host a canned food drive Friday through Sunday at Edison Field. Fans are encouraged to bring canned or boxed food items or money donations to special bins located at gates 1 and 4.
Fans bringing 10 cans or more will receive a voucher that can be redeemed for two tickets to an upcoming Angels game. Player pictures will be handed out for each donation.
Gates will open 1 1/2 hours before game time each day and the food drive booths will remain open through the second inning. Friday’s game against the Dodgers begins at 7 p.m. and Saturday’s at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the Angels host San Diego, beginning at 5 p.m.
CANOE/KAYAKING
* National teams from Brazil, Canada and the United States and the Pro Chiavari Italian team will participate in the Canoe/Kayak Polo Tournament Thursday through Saturday at the U.S. Water Polo National Training Center Pool on the grounds of the Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Games will be played from 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
