Tax on Deposits

Re “A Recycling Plan to Fill the Gap,” editorial, July 6:

The food manufacturing industry is partially correct in calling this a hidden tax. Currently I pay an extra penny per six-pack or nickel per case in sales tax on the 2.5-cent deposit for soft drinks. If the Legislature would repeal the sales tax on the deposit, the hidden tax issue could be honestly refuted. Until then, the refundable fee does carry a hidden tax.
