U.S. Sets Sanctions Against Taliban

The United States has imposed sanctions against the Taliban religious militia that rules Afghanistan in retaliation for its reputed protection of alleged terrorist Osama bin Laden. President Clinton’s executive order also freezes any assets the Taliban or its leaders may have in the United States. U.S. officials said the last straw was intelligence information that Bin Laden’s group, accused of bombing two U.S. embassies in Africa in August, was planning to attack other U.S. embassies. The New York representative of the Taliban, Abdul Hakim Mujahed, denied that the movement actively supported Bin Laden.
