Fountain Valley school board trustees recently approved an application to request federal funds to reduce the size of sixth-grade classes in reading, English and language arts. Although the class-size reduction would be minimal--possibly from a 30-to-1 student-teacher ratio to 28 to 1--the district could get about $63,500, which it could use to implement more reading instruction in the sixth grade.
