Todd and Rocky’s Costume Ball

Let’s do the Time Warp again!

“The Rocky Horror Show” is back on stage, with a makeover by clothing designer Todd Oldham. Known for his colorful, youthful creations, Oldham was called in by director Dennis Erdman to update the show’s ‘70s look for its two-month run in Los Angeles, which begins Friday at the Tiffany Theater.

What changes has he made?

“One of the biggest differences is the lipstick,” Oldham says. “It’s much more neutral instead of that blinding red. The drag element is gone. [And] all the costumes are couture, like major extravaganzas. Everything is very opulent.”

Oldham accepted the challenge of updating the “Rocky Horror” costumes because of star David Arquette, who takes on the role of Frank ‘N’ Furter. Oldham says he’s been a longtime fan of Arquette’s, and his character’s look alone reflects how the styling has been modernized.

But will die-hard “Rocky Horror” purists accept the characters’ new looks?

“In a way they’re more extreme than the original. I think people will respond to that.”
