1,000 Students Take Pledge for a Drug-Free Life

LOS ANGELES — More than 1,000 students at Foshay Learning Center pledged to live drug-free lives. The pledge was made during a special assembly Tuesday as part of the third annual Drug-Free Southern California Week.
The kindergarten through 12th-grade students watched a skit performed by some of the high school students and listened to a choir. Raquel Garcia, a seventh-grader, won the anti-drug poster contest with her illustration “Think About It.” The poster will be displayed at bus shelters throughout Southern California.
“This event is important because we’re reaching kids early and telling them they don’t need drugs to be cool,” said Kate Mulhearn, a spokeswoman for Drug-Free Southern California, which is funded by the state Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.
Elementary school students throughout the Los Angeles Unified School District are expected to take the pledge this week. On Friday, former members of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team will visit Lennox Middle School as part of the anti-drug effort.
