Plaschke Named Top California Sportswriter

Bill Plaschke, Times sports columnist, has been voted California sportswriter of the year for 1998 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Assn.

Plaschke, who joined The Times in 1987, has been a sports columnist since 1996. Before that, he served as the paper’s national NFL writer, Dodger beat writer, and San Diego Padre beat writer for the former San Diego County edition.

Dodger announcer Vin Scully was voted California sportscaster of the year. Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press and Jim Nantz of CBS were voted national sportswriter and sportscaster of the year.
