Opportunities for Volunteering
Temple Judea is seeking volunteers for its English as a Second Language program. The temple, located at 5429 Lindley Ave., Tarzana, needs people to teach three or four hours weekly. Classes are on weekdays and hours are flexible, but tutors need to make at least a one-year commitment. Class sizes range from two to 12 students, and a 16-hour training program begins Feb. 1. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art needs volunteers to lead tours of its permanent collection and special exhibitions. Bilingual volunteers are especially needed, and guides should enjoy studying art, public speaking and working with children. An admissions committee will start interviewing applicants March 22. Those accepted must complete a one-year course in art history and tour techniques that begins in September. English as a Second Language/Literacy tutors are needed by the San Fernando Valley Literacy Council. The Wonder of Reading organization is seeking reading partners for elementary school students. Participants must volunteer at least one hour every two weeks for six months during school hours, usually between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Volunteers take a three-hour training session before they are matched with students.
