Angels Switch the Dial to KLAC

The Angels moved to the left of the dial Friday, signing up with KLAC (570 AM) for their radio broadcasts.

The move resolves a critical Disney mistake. In 1997, the company signed five-year agreements with KRLA (1110 AM) to air games of Disney’s Angels and Mighty Ducks, but the station’s signal could not be heard in all of Orange County. The Angels had to add an FM outlet so their games could be heard throughout their home county.

The Ducks left KRLA after one season for XTRA (690 AM). The Angels also left KRLA after one season, enticed in part by a package that includes broadcasts of every spring training game for the first time in recent memory.

The package also includes extensive Angel programming before and after games, including a daily talk show that will not be hosted by either of the play-by-play broadcasters, Mario Impemba and Brian Barnhart.

KLAC also airs Laker broadcasts, which will take priority over Angel broadcasts. Wagner said the Angels would soon announce a secondary radio station to carry games on nights when KLAC airs the Lakers.

KLAC General Manager Ed Krampf said the Angels fit nicely with the KLAC format, which features swing, big band and pop standards.

“Baseball is pretty much a 35-plus sport,” Krampf said. “There are a lot of people who grew up with that inextricable link of an AM radio and an earpiece.”
