Stanford’s Montgomery Gets No. 400

Maybe Stanford Coach Mike Montgomery will eventually take the time to savor his 400th career victory. Right now, he’s too busy thinking about getting the next one.
Peter Sauer scored a season-high 19 points and Kris Weems had 17 as the fifth-ranked Cardinal defeated Oregon State, 72-56, on Saturday at Maples Pavilion for Montgomery’s milestone victory.
“At some point, you look back and recognize how long you’ve been in the game,” said Montgomery, who has a 400-211 record in 21 seasons at Stanford and Montana. “But win No. 401 is the one I’m concerned about right now.”
Stanford (11-2) won its sixth consecutive Pacific 10 opener and seventh in a row this season after consecutive losses to North Carolina and Maryland.
The Cardinal made seven three-point shots to take a 41-18 halftime lead, then patiently worked the ball inside to stay comfortably ahead.
Josh Steinthal’s 20 points led Oregon State (6-4), which shot 35% in losing to a ranked opponent for the 12th consecutive time. Point guard Deaundra Tanner, the Beavers’ leading scorer, missed 18 of 20 shots.
Oregon 71, California 69--Frederick Jones tipped in a missed shot with 0.8 seconds left in overtime of the Pac-10 opener at Oakland as the Ducks (9-1) won their seventh game in a row.
The game-deciding basket was first waved off by officials after they apparently confused the game clock with the shot clock, which expired as A.D. Smith’s 10-foot jumper bounced high off the back rim. But Jones’ tip-in clearly came in time.
Geno Carlisle’s three-point shot at the buzzer hit the rim.
Oregon’s Alex Scales led all scorers with 21 points, while Thomas Kilgore had 17 points off the bench for California (9-2).
The Golden Bears trailed by as many as 17 points in the first half but used a 9-0 run to take a 55-54 lead with 6:54 remaining.
After several lead changes, Kilgore twisted through three defenders for a fastbreak layup to tie the score at 65 with 44.1 seconds left--and the final points of regulation.
