Fullerton High Jumper Sets Record
Cal State Fullerton high jumper Paul Ruvolo broke a school record with a 7-foot jump, leading the Titans to a third-place finish with 122 points in a four-way men’s track meet Saturday at Santa Barbara City College.
Ruvolo surpassed the 6-10 record shared by Dominick Sturz (1998) and Zaylore Stout (1995). Cal Poly San Luis Obispo finished first with 234 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara (154 points). CS Bakersfield took fourth with 111 points.
In nonconference baseball:
Titan game suspended--Saturday’s Cal State Fullerton-Alabama baseball game at Tuscaloosa, Ala., was suspended because of rain in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alabama is leading, 5-4.
The game will resume today with the Crimson Tide batting with the bases loaded and one out.
In Golden State Athletic conference baseball:
Southern California College 6-2, Pt. Loma Nazarene 4-8--Kevin Candelaria singled, doubled and scored three times for SCC (4-10, 1-7) in the first game.
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
UC Irvine 66, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 63--UC Irvine held a 15-point lead three times in the second half, but with 6:47 remaining, Caroline Rowles made a layup to tie the score, 55-55, for Cal Poly (8-18, 2-13).
The Anteaters, however, regained the lead on Megan Stafford’s (22 points, 9 assists) three-pointer. Kirsten Cappel had 17 points and eight rebounds for UCI (11-15, 7-8), which advanced to the Big West Tournament.
No. 21 UC Santa Barbara 94, CS Fullerton 49--Erin Buescher scored 19 points as UC Santa Barbara became the first team in 10 years to finish its Big West Conference schedule undefeated.
Andrea Thieme scored 16 points to lead Fullerton (4-22, 2-13).
In Golden State Athletic conference women’s basketball:
Concordia 72, Cal Baptist 55--Priscilla Bendik had 27 points and 16 rebounds to lead Concordia (16-11, 9-5).
Jaime Gast had 17 points, seven rebounds, and six assists for Concordia.
Veronica Patee scored 14 for Cal Baptist (8-23, 1-13).
Southern California College 62, Westmont 39--Kristi Wright had 20 points to lead Southern California College (23-8, 11-3), which clinched at least a share of the conference championship. Sara Herkenhoff had 13 points and 13 rebounds as the Vanguards pushed their home winning streak to 33 games.
In the Golden State Athletic Conference softball:
Southern California College 2-3, Biola 0-1--Gretchen Brandt pitched a complete game and struck out 20 and Alicia Groshon had two RBIs in the first game for SCC. Crissy Vega went three for four in the second game for the visiting Vanguards (11-4, 2-0). Biola drops to 4-6, 0-2.
In the Big West swimming and diving championships:
Klatt wins--UC Irvine junior Dan Klatt won his second Big West individual title by finishing first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45 seconds. UC Santa Barbara placed first and UCI was fourth.
