Mater Dei Has Little Trouble at Villa Park
Steve Scoggin scored 17 points and Mike Bayer had 12 to lead Mater Dei to a 64-48 victory over Villa Park in the second round of the Southern Section Division I-A boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday at Villa Park.
The Monarchs (28-3) held Villa Park to four points in the second quarter. Andy Olsen scored 10 points to lead the Spartans (19-9). Mater Dei plays Moreno Valley in a quarterfinal game Friday.
In other Division I-A games:
La Puente Nogales 59, Katella 54--Matt Tisthammer scored 15 points to lead Katella, but the Knights (21-7) were outscored, 16-6, in the fourth quarter.
Moreno Valley 73, University 57--Andy Lawrence had 22 points, including six three-pointers, and Chet Johnson had 21 for host University (17-10). Moreno Valley is 20-7.
San Bernardino Pacific 98, San Clemente 93 (OT)--Pacific (21-4) outscored San Clemente, 32-25, in the fourth quarter to force an overtime.
Triton point guard Ivan Cruz fouled out late in the fourth, enabling Pacific to capitalize. The Pirates’ Mike Hall had 26 points, and James Burries added 25 points and 19 rebounds. San Clemente’s Mitchell Pierce scored 30 points.
Simi Valley 60, Troy 50--Troy led, 41-40, with five minutes left in the fourth quarter but Simi Valley capitalized on free-throw opportunities, making eight of nine in the quarter. Rafael Berumen scored 24 points for Simi Valley (26-2) and Jerry Inzunza had 21 for host Troy (18-11).
In Division I-AA:
Moreno Valley Valley View 73, Capistrano Valley 61--Capistrano Valley trailed by 16 points after the third and came within six twice in the fourth, but couldn’t get any closer. J.J. Sola scored 28 points and Mike Stowell had 22 for the host Cougars (22-7).
Ontario 71, Los Alamitos 51--Andrew Pleik scored 21 points and had seven rebounds in the loss for host Los Alamitos (20-8). Ontario is 25-3.
In Division III-AA:
Mission Hills Alemany 72, Servite 59--Ted Ranzan had 18 points and Evan Friedl added 14 for host Servite (15-13).
In Division IV-A:
Los Angeles Verbum Dei 66, Orange Lutheran 46--Verbum Dei went on a 15-0 run in the first and took a 34-22 lead at the half. Marlon Parmer and Dalron Johnson each scored 18 points for the Eagles (22-7). Jason Whieldon scored 23 to lead host Orange Lutheran (15-11).
Mojave 56, Calvary Chapel 54--Junior Joshua Sherman led Calvary Chapel (18-10) with 16 points and senior Jeremy Ampe scored a career-high 15 points, making five three-pointers.
Brett Young, the Eagles leading scorer, was held to eight points. Mojave (22-2) was led by David Johnson with 20 points.
