I agree with the views expressed in your Feb. 5 editorial and most of the comments of Robert Jones’ Feb. 7 column. However, when you commended the three board members who opposed the Belmont Learning Center project, it could be inferred that I voted for the project. I was not a member of the board when this vote was taken.
Nevertheless, I have visited the site with the newly engaged district safety team and questioned them. I have read the transcript of a board meeting dealing with the Belmont site’s safety and environmental problems, which was held before I became a board member, and have listened to the tapes of the recent Facility Committee meeting. I find that the questions on most topics posed by those colleagues who opposed this project often reflect my own concerns (and vice versa). I can only conclude that I would have joined those colleagues in opposition.
I do not agree with Jones’ conclusion that the buck stopped at a committee hearing. I am confident that a majority of the board will not let anyone culpable off the hook.
