Fire Hits Chamonix Resort in France

CHAMONIX, France — A fire last week devastated the center of this Alpine resort town, just a week after two avalanches on a nearby mountainside killed 12 people and wrecked 17 chalets. The fire destroyed a shopping center, the town’s Alpine museum and a municipal building, officials said. A firefighter suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
