Roy Haskell Shelley; Retired Auto Shop Owner
Thousand Oaks resident Roy Haskell Shelley died Wednesday following a brief illness. He was 76.
Shelley was born July 28, 1922, in Burkesville, Ky. His family moved to Santa Paula in 1933, where he was raised.
In 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps and served in World War II. Shelley flew air coverage over the Battleship Missouri during the signing of the Japanese surrender, his family said.
After returning home as a decorated veteran, Shelley attended a radio arts school and received a certificate in radio engineering and announcing.
For 16 years, Shelley owned and operated a gas station on the corner of Moorpark and Wilbur roads in Thousand Oaks. In 1980, he opened Shelley’s Precision Auto on Thousand Oaks Boulevard. He retired in 1993.
Shelley worked part time as a marshal at the Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks and was an avid golfer and member of the course’s men’s club.
He coached and managed Little League baseball in Thousand Oaks and, along with his wife, was a member of the Buckles and Bows Square Dance Club and the Camelot Round Dance Club.
Shelley is survived by his wife of 48 years, Vonnie Shelley of Thousand Oaks; a son, Bill Shelley of the Santa Rosa Valley; three sisters, Lucille Everett of Piru and Millie Peters and Gladys Bell, both of Santa Paula; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Mortuary in Westlake Village. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in the mortuary’s chapel led by Deacon James Farley and the Rev. Charles Lack.
Arrangements are being handled by the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
