Walter Camargo, among a group of UC Irvine soccer players who said in January they were quitting the team, has transferred to Cal State Fullerton, Titan Coach Al Mistri said Thursday.

Irvine denied Camargo’s request to be released from his scholarship commitment, which means he will have to sit out one year before becoming eligible at Fullerton, Mistri said.

Camargo, a sophomore midfielder who played at Mater Dei, will have two years of eligibility remaining under NCAA and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rules.

Camargo was Irvine’s top scorer in 1997 as a freshman with five goals and five assists. He had one goal and four assists last season.
