Esperanza Runs Past Oilers in Fourth
Esperanza outscored Huntington Beach by nine points in the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 59-46 victory over the eighth-ranked Oilers in a Sunset League girls’ basketball game Tuesday at Esperanza.
Huntington Beach center Courtney McKinney left the game because of an ankle injury with about three minutes left and Esperanza then outscored the Oilers, 8-0. Allison Gerber scored 18 points to lead the Aztecs (15-7, 5-2).
McKinney had 17 points for Huntington Beach (15-8, 3-4).
In other Sunset League games:
No. 6 Marina 58, Fountain Valley 46--Chanda McLeod had 20 points and Miranda Emde scored a career-high 17 to lead host Marina (20-3, 4-2). Fountain Valley is 6-17, 1-6.
Edison 58, Los Alamitos 22--Michelle Zylstra had 13 points and six rebounds for Edison, which went on a 19-2 run in the first quarter.
In the Academy League:
Capistrano Valley Christian 70, Southern California Christian 7--Sarah Wild scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds and Crystal Hickey had 17 rebounds for Capistrano Valley Christian (16-4, 8-1).
In the Century League:
No. 9 Foothill 56, Villa Park 39--Kristin Mann led Foothill (19-3, 7-0) with 15 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Kelsi Sousa scored 13 points and Chavaughn Brown had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Canyon 53, Santa Ana Valley 36--Trish Christian scored 11 points and had 10 steals and Paulette Seaman scored 14 points to help lead Canyon (14-4, 6-1) over Santa Ana Valley. Stephanie Hillon had 11 points and 14 rebounds for Canyon. Raven Hebert scored nine points for Santa Ana Valley.
El Modena 40, Orange 35 (OT)--Andrea Levinson made a free throw with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie the score, 35-35, then Valerie Matweeff (20 points) scored four of El Modena’s five points in overtime.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 57, Kennedy 25--Courtney Smith and Sydney Patten each had 14 points for host El Dorado (17-7, 6-2). Kennedy is 7-17, 0-8.
Loara 53, Katella 41--Carrie Banister had 19 points and 11 rebounds for Loara (13-12, 4-4), which pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Katella, 16-4. Loara made nine of 16 free throws in the quarter.
In the Orange League:
No. 1 Brea Olinda 83, Valencia 35--Chelsea Trotter scored 21 points, Kate Ides had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Lindsey Davidson had 14 points and eight assists for visiting Brea Olinda (20-3, 7-0). Second-place Valencia falls to 15-7, 5-2.
Anaheim 48, Savanna 41--Yuri Alvarado led visiting Anaheim (11-8, 3-4) with 12 points. Reanita Starr had 16 points, including four three-pointers, to lead Savanna (8-15, 3-4).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Estancia 32, Aliso Niguel 29--Lisa Steinfeld made four three-pointers and scored 18 points for Estancia (14-7, 4-3). Erika Castro scored 13 points for Aliso Niguel (5-18, 2-5).
University 49, Costa Mesa 39--Fala Suiaunoa had 19 points and Kirsten von Tungeln had 11 rebounds for visiting University (11-12, 3-4). It was the first league loss for Costa Mesa (15-8, 6-1).
In the Sea View League:
No. 3 El Toro 69, Newport Harbor 50--Giuliana Mendiola scored 27 points and Gioconda Mendiola had 19 for El Toro (16-3, 7-0). April Ross scored 20 points to lead visiting Newport Harbor (13-11, 1-6).
Santa Margarita 51, Irvine 40--Daniell Bennett scored 19 points for visiting Santa Margarita (15-8, 5-2). Kristin Thawley had 14 points to lead Irvine (14-9, 3-4).
Woodbridge 33, Corona del Mar 18--Woodbridge outscored Corona del Mar, 19-4, in the final quarter. Amber Avestruz scored nine points for Woodbridge.
In the South Coast League:
No. 7 San Clemente 70, Dana Hills 50--Debby Caine scored 20 points and had five assists for San Clemente (16-8, 6-1), which went on a 22-8 run in the first quarter and never trailed after that. Nicole Howard scored 25 points, including six three-pointers, to lead Dana Hills (16-7, 4-3).
