Carpool Lane Opens on Pomona Freeway

POMONA — A new 7.5-mile carpool lane opened along the Pomona Freeway on Tuesday.
The lane runs along the center median of the freeway, connecting westbound carpool lanes in San Bernardino County to Brea Canyon Road. Eastbound carpool lanes along the same stretch are scheduled to open later this week, said Patricia Reid, a Caltrans spokeswoman.
Caltrans and the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority paid for the $20.8-million project through Los Angeles County’s penny-per-dollar transit sales tax, Reid said.
More than 300,000 vehicles drive in both directions along that stretch of the Pomona Freeway every day, Reid said. The lanes were opened to relieve some of the traffic congestion and to improve air quality in the area, she said.
Caltrans hopes to extend the carpool lanes along the Pomona Freeway to the Hollywood Freeway interchange in the next 20 years. The second phase, extending from Brea Canyon Road to the San Gabriel River Freeway, is scheduled for completion by April 2003.
