No. 1-ranked Connecticut, playing without leading scorer Richard Hamilton and leading rebounder Jake Voskuhl, fell from the unbeaten ranks Monday night, losing to No. 16 Syracuse, 59-42, at Hartford, Conn.

Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun didn’t use the injuries as an excuse.

“We did dress five people who could play. Richard and Jake didn’t make any mistakes so they were no factors in the game,” Calhoun said. “I thought the guys on the floor would do a better job.”

Freshman Damone Brown scored all 14 of his points in the second half as the Orangemen, 16-6 overall and 7-5 in the Big East, won for the fourth time in five games. They outrebounded the Huskies, 37-26.

Connecticut (19-1, 11-1), the nation’s last unbeaten team, struggled against Syracuse’s zone, shooting 36%, including three for 15 from three-point range.
