Defendant Admits He Stabbed Mother to Death
SOUTH PASADENA — A South Pasadena man admitted in court Monday that he stabbed his mother to death with a kitchen knife.
Jay Herber III pleaded guilty to murder. But the judge will decide whether Herber was sane at the time, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Renee Cartaya. The sanity phase of the trial is set to begin March 5. Judge Teri Schwartz will determine whether Herber will go to prison for a maximum of 51 years or to a psychiatric facility.
On Feb. 19, 1997, he stabbed 76-year-old Rita Herber multiple times in the South Pasadena home he shared with her.
